The Celsius temperature scale
Swedish astronomer (1701–1744) who gave the world its everyday temperature scale.
He divided the gap between freezing and boiling water into a hundred steps — though in his version water boiled at 0 and froze at 100; the scale was flipped the right way up soon after his death. He also helped prove the Earth is flattened at the poles on an expedition to Lapland, and noticed that the northern lights make compass needles twitch.
