Euclid
Father of geometry
Greek mathematician working in Alexandria around 300 BCE.
Wrote the Elements — thirteen books of geometry built from a handful of axioms, the standard math textbook from antiquity through the 19th century. When King Ptolemy I asked for a shortcut to learning geometry, Euclid reportedly snapped: 'There is no royal road to geometry.'
