Hypatia of Alexandria
Alexandria's last great scholar
Greek philosopher, mathematician and astronomer in Roman Alexandria (c. 350-415 CE).
Headed the Platonic school of Alexandria, lectured publicly on Plato and Aristotle, and edited mathematical works on conic sections and Ptolemy's Almagest. Refused to convert to Christianity in an increasingly hostile city; a mob of zealots eventually dragged her from her carriage and killed her — a turning point often cited as the symbolic end of Alexandria's golden age of learning.
