Galileo Galilei
Father of observational astronomy
Italian astronomer and physicist (1564-1642) who turned the telescope to the sky.
Built his own telescope and within months found Jupiter's four moons, the phases of Venus, and craters on the Moon — proof the heavens weren't perfect. Hauled before the Inquisition for backing Copernicus, he recanted under threat, then (legend says) muttered 'and yet it moves.'
