Athenian day-runner who carried the call for help before the battle of Marathon.
A professional messenger who covered the hundred and forty miles to Sparta and back on foot in days. The later story gives him one last run from Marathon to Athens to gasp out the victory and drop dead — which is why a modern race carries the battlefield's name.
