Mary Wollstonecraft
Vindication of the Rights of Woman
English writer and philosopher (1759-1797).
Self-taught and self-supporting — rare for an 18th-century woman — she ran a school, wrote for radical journals and witnessed the French Revolution from Paris. Her 1792 Vindication of the Rights of Woman argued that women appeared inferior only because they were denied education, demolishing the era's framework for thinking about gender. Died eleven days after giving birth to Mary Shelley.
