German composer (1770-1827) who bridged the Classical and Romantic eras.
He began losing his hearing in his late 20s and wrote some of music's greatest works — including the Ninth Symphony — while almost completely deaf. At its premiere he had to be turned around to see the audience applauding, because he couldn't hear it.
