Invented the telephone
Scottish-born inventor, scientist and teacher of the deaf (1847-1922).
Both his mother and wife were deaf, which shaped his entire career around acoustics. His first telephone call in 1876 was famously next-door: 'Mr Watson — come here, I want to see you.' Lived long enough to see telephones become commonplace; the entire US phone network observed a minute of silence at his funeral.
