Rachel Carson
Silent Spring author
American marine biologist and conservationist (1907-1964).
Worked for US Fish and Wildlife before turning bestselling author. Her 1962 Silent Spring documented DDT's catastrophic effect on bird life — the title imagines a spring with no birds singing. The chemical industry savaged her; the book triggered the US DDT ban, the EPA, and the modern environmental movement. Died of cancer two years later.
