Invented dynamite, founded the Nobel Prizes
Swedish chemist and inventor (1833–1896) who left his fortune to the Nobel Prizes.
He tamed nitroglycerin into dynamite, held 355 patents and built factories across Europe. In 1888 a French newspaper mistook his brother's death for his own and called him "the merchant of death" — the story goes that he resolved to be remembered differently. His will founded the prizes for physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and peace.
