Discovered penicillin
Scottish bacteriologist (1881-1955).
Notoriously messy lab worker. Left for a 1928 holiday with petri dishes piled on his bench; came back to find a mold killing all the bacteria around it. He published the finding but never developed the drug — Florey and Chain did, a decade later, in time to save thousands of WWII soldiers.
