Moses Maimonides
Rabbi, philosopher, physician
Sephardic Jewish scholar (1138-1204) born in Córdoba, lived in Cairo.
Fled childhood persecution to Cairo, where he became court physician to Saladin — the same Saladin who fought Richard the Lionheart in the Crusades. By day treated patients at the sultan's court; by night codified all of Jewish law (Mishneh Torah) and reconciled faith with Aristotelian reason. Famously declined to be Richard's physician.
