Mary Seacole
Crimean War nurse + entrepreneur
Jamaican-British nurse and hotelier (1805-1881).
Learned Caribbean herbal medicine from her mother, treated cholera and yellow fever across Jamaica and Panama, then sailed to London at the start of the Crimean War to volunteer — and was rejected, almost certainly because she was Black. So she funded her own trip to the front and built the 'British Hotel' near the battlefield, nursing wounded soldiers in person. Her memoir was a Victorian bestseller.
