First written law code
King of Babylon (reigned c. 1792-1750 BCE).
Unified Mesopotamia under Babylon, but is remembered for his 282 laws carved on a 2.25-meter black stone stele — still on display in the Louvre. Famous for 'an eye for an eye,' with punishments that varied by social class. Predates the Ten Commandments by about 500 years.
