Abraham Lincoln
16th US president
American president (1809-1865) who led the Union through the Civil War.
Born in a Kentucky log cabin with about one year of formal schooling, he taught himself law by firelight. Reluctant candidate, lost almost every early election, then won the presidency just as the South seceded. Shot in the back of the head at Ford's Theatre five days after Lee's surrender.
