Eastern Roman emperor (reigned 527-565).
Nearly restored the old Roman Empire, reconquering North Africa, Italy and parts of Spain through his general Belisarius. Commissioned the Corpus Juris Civilis, foundation of European civil law. Built the Hagia Sophia so vast he reportedly cried, 'Solomon, I have surpassed thee!' His wife Theodora, a former actress, saved his throne during the Nika riots.
