Sojourner Truth
Abolitionist + women's rights
American abolitionist and women's rights activist (c. 1797-1883).
Born enslaved in New York as Isabella Baumfree; walked away from bondage in 1826 with her infant daughter, then became the first Black woman to win a US court case against a white man — recovering her son from illegal sale. Renamed herself Sojourner Truth in 1843 and toured the country preaching against slavery. Her electrifying 'Ain't I a Woman?' speech in 1851 fused abolition with women's rights into one moral demand.
