Thucydides
Peloponnesian War historian
Athenian general and historian (c. 460-400 BCE).
An Athenian commander exiled after losing Amphipolis to the Spartans, he spent the exile writing a brutally clear-eyed account of the war. Unlike Herodotus, he stripped out gods and tall tales to focus on what people actually did and why. His 'Thucydides trap' is still cited about US-China relations today.
