English novelist (1775-1817).
Wrote her six famous novels on a small mahogany table in a corner of the family sitting room — slipping the manuscript under blotting paper whenever someone walked in. Published anonymously as 'A Lady' during her lifetime; the witty, sharp-eyed social comedies have never been out of print. Died at 41, probably of Addison's disease.
