Socrates
Foundational philosopher
Ancient Athenian philosopher (470-399 BCE).
Wrote nothing himself — we know him entirely through his student Plato. Wandered around Athens asking awkward questions ('What IS justice?') until the city put him on trial for corrupting youth and impiety. Given the chance to escape, he refused on principle, drank the hemlock, and chatted philosophy with his friends until he died.
