Virgil
Author of the Aeneid
Roman poet (70-19 BCE).
Spent his last 11 years on the Aeneid, a Roman answer to Homer — effectively propaganda for Emperor Augustus, but such gorgeous propaganda it became a foundational text anyway. On his deathbed he begged for the unfinished manuscript to be burned; Augustus overruled him. Dante chose Virgil as his guide through Hell.
