Florentine poet (1265-1321).
Picked the wrong faction in chaotic medieval Florence and was exiled on pain of death — he never saw his city again. In exile he wrote the Divine Comedy, choosing Tuscan Italian over prestigious Latin and single-handedly helping standardize what we now call Italian. He gleefully populated each circle of Hell with his political enemies.
