The Bard of Avon
English playwright and poet (1564-1616), the colossus of English literature.
He wrote some 37 plays and 154 sonnets, coined or popularized over 1,700 words still in use — 'eyeball,' 'lonely,' 'bedroom.' An actor and shareholder in the Globe Theatre, his comedies and tragedies have never left the stage. He left his wife his second-best bed — which was, oddly, the customary bequest of the time.
